Philly rapper Tommy Hill (John Wilson) was murdered and robbed early December 2 upon exiting a Philadelphia bar named Reuben’s Marc, according to BET.com.
“He was in a bar having a good time and afterwards they shot him and robbed him,” an anonymous source told BET.com. “The dudes he was with shot back, security came out and it was a hectic situation.”
Tommy Hill, member of Philadelphia hip hop group R.A.M. Squad, died from the bullet wounds in a hospital a few days later, said the same anonymous source.
“He thought he was safe and it turned ugly on him,” the source reported to AllHipHop.com. “People sleep on Uptown and that part of the city. [But] this is the same place Cassidy got into his situation, it’s just as bad as North and South Philly. He thought he was in an area where he was safe.”
The same source said that rumors of Hill being a “snitch” may have prompted the shooting. “To make it worse, word is they were like, ‘What was this rat ass ni**a doing up here in the first place and he got his stuff on?’” said the source. “It is what it is. It could have been anything. He told on the Mob.”
AllHipHop.com reported that “despite his career as a rapper, Tommy Hill ran into serious legal trouble in 2003, during a federal investigation into the R.A.M. Squad’s involvement in the city’s cocaine trade. [He] was charged with selling 51 grams of crack cocaine to a government witness, who was wired with a recording device provided by the FBI.”
As a result, AllHipHop.com claims that Hill faced a 10-year minimum prison sentence, in which he pleaded guilty to the charges.
In addition to this, the website reported that “Tommy Hill was allegedly a close associate of Philly mob boss skinny Joey Merlino and he had stated that the FBI had been seeking information from him, in relation to Merlino’s activities.”
Because of this, Tommy Hill was “dogged” by fellow rappers for being a snitch and cooperating with the government.
According to BET.com, in 2010 “Tommy Hill had allegedly relocated to Atlanta and was trying to make a musical comeback. He renamed himself Tommy Butta and made some noise last year for dissing fellow Philadelphi a rap star Beanie Sigel, calling him a ‘rat’.”
R.A.M. Squad’s fellow member Boy Backs came to Hill’s rescue, claiming on camera that he was the informant who set Tommy Hill up.
Either way, the same anonymous source told AllHipHop.com that the primary motive for the murder was probably just robbery, although the rumors of Hill being an informant may have fueled some of the aggression.
